windows 8 on 8/8 at building 88!

this was a very exciting summer to be at microsoft on the windows team because windows 8 was released while we were interns. i was working on the windows 8 people app in building number 88 – my lucky number also happens to be 8 because i was born on august 8! so today, on my birthday (8/8/2012), microsoft held a launch party for windows 8.

earlier in the day, we presented the windows 8 people app at the explore intern tech fair to other interns, microsoft employees, managers and mentors

here’s our entire team in front of our presentation board!

today was also the windows 8 launch party where steve ballmer and steve sinofsky signed off on windows 8 and released it to manufacturers. it was a pretty epic party. there was tons of food, games, and SMASH MOUTH performed!!

i got to go on stage with smash mouth!!

biking tour of seattle

two of my coworkers brought us on a 28-mile biking tour of seattle today. it was pretty tiring but such an enjoyable 28 miles!!

started out at gas works park

through some of the old shipyards and industrial areas of seattle

on the waterfront of puget sound toward seattle

to chinatown to get dim sum!

alllll the way around eliot bay towards alki beach

the beautiful view of seattle across the bay from alki

towards fremont across the fremont bridge, the most frequently used draw bridge

the troll under the bridge!

what an awesome day!!

microsoft intern signature event

microsoft rented out all of gas works park (a really pretty park overlooking lake union and the seattle skyline) for a huge outdoor concert for all the interns.

two bands alabama shakes and young and the giant played, there was tons and tons of food, and everyone left with a brand new samsung series 9 ultrabook pre-installed with windows 8!

the park taken over by microsoft interns picnic-ing and waiting for the bands

bite of seattle food festival

the bite of seattle food festival showcases some of the coolest eateries around the seattle area. we went and got to taste some pretty cool foods!

russian dumplings!

fresh coconut juice straight from the coconut! the best part was scooping out the jello-y stuff in the middle

fried bananas with condensed milk and peanuts on top!

yum!

then afterwards, we went on the ferris wheel by the piers that just opened this summer and has some great views of the seattle skyline, olympic mountains and puget sound!

stand-up paddleboarding!

we bought a livingsocial deal this weekend and went paddleboarding at juanita beach park by the kirkland waterfront of lake washington. it was a nice and hot day, so perfect to be out on the water!

paddleboarding is a pretty popular thing in the seattle area – it became popular in hawaii and then people started doing it here too. essentially it’s like surfing and canoeing at the same time. you stand on a board and then have a paddle that helps you move.

it actually looks much harder than it is. it’s surprisingly easy to balance on it once you get the hang of it – and sometimes people even do yoga on a paddleboard!

mt. rainier!!

we went hiking at mt. rainier today!! it was still pretty cold and most parts of the mountain were covered in snow, so hiking was pretty tough in my tennis shoes because it was slippery. however, the great thing about all the snow was that we got to slide down the huge hills in garbage bags that we brought!!

intern day of caring

all the interns took the day off to do community service today for “intern day of caring.” we were assigned to different work sites with different non-profits in the area.

all the explore interns spent a day under the hot sun pulling weeds, laying down mulch and restoring natural areas by the duwamish river with people for puget sound.
